V Magazine interviews Lady Gaga’s manager

V MagazineGET READY FOR V82, ON STANDS FEBRUARY 28. PREVIEW THE ISSUE NOW WITH AN INTERVIEW WITH THE MASTERMIND BEHIND THE MEGASTAR, LADY GAGA’S MANAGER, TROY CARTER

With only three albums under her belt, Lady Gaga is already a household name. But unless you’re working in the businesses of music or social media, you might not be as familiar with Troy Carter, Gaga’s manager and the genius behind her media presence. V sat down to talk shop with the guy who helped Mother Monster get massive.

How did you originally meet and come to work with Lady Gaga?
Troy Carter We were introduced by Vincent Herbert, who was her executive producer at her record label. You saw the energy when she walked in the room. She was very specific about her vision, all of the music was there, and all she needed was someone to help her translate it to the rest of the world, which is where I came in.

When did you first realize the potential social media had to affect Gaga’s career?
TC I think it developed because we were forced into it. We couldn’t get her record played on the radio and we couldn’t get the video on TV. YouTube and blogs were our platforms in the very beginning because the Internet was the only platform!

Is it true that Lady Gaga’s next record, ArtPop, will be released as an app?
TC The album is going to be an app. It will also exist in CD and digital form, but the primary experience will be as an application. It will be built around the tablet, but will have a mobile version as well.

How do you think the business of pop music will evolve?
TC This is the best time to be in the music industry. As sub-Saharan Africa and China go completely mobile, you have people who’ve never had access to the music we offer all of a sudden able to access it. I think we can reach a lot more people now. You’re going to see a lot more friction points for independent artists disappear, but there will be more artists than ever. You’ll have to look at making money through a different lens. Artists are going to be giving away music in exchange for different things, like data or purchasing a ticket or a piece of merchandise. There will be new ways to monetize music, but it may not be the music itself.

What is your most memorable experience of working with Gaga? Does anything particularly surreal stand out?
TC I think—and I can say this because it just happened recently—it was seeing her have a casual conversation with the President about gay rights issues. When you think back to six years ago, this girl from New York walking in with ripped-up stockings, and now she’s having conversations with the President about serious issues-—it’s a bit surreal.

What is next for the Troy/Gaga think tank?
TC I have no idea! We could have never predicted we’d be where we are right now, so I have no clue what the next five years are going to look like, but I hope it gets even better.

Zedd talks about ARTPOP – ‘There are no limits’

Annie Leibovitz (Vanity Fair) (5)Zedd has spoke about Lady Gaga’s upcoming album ‘ARTPOP’ in a recent interview with Digital Spy and has revealed that ‘there are no limits’.

Outside of your own music, you’re working on Lady Gaga’s new album. That’s quite a big task, isn’t it?

“For me, it’s the biggest honor as not many people get to work with one of the biggest artists in the world. It’s even better that I was a huge fan of Gaga before and it was a dream of mine to produce a song for her. In that sense, the pressure on it is huge! That said, the fact that she is so open-minded musically and creatively has made it easier in some ways.”

“She wants me to do the craziest songs I can possibly do. I’m not thinking about fitting a shoe on the right foot. We’re doing something completely unique and what we think is new. She’s not been saying, ‘You need to please my fans so make the songs sound like this’, we’ve just made music.”

Born This Way was a huge album that some considered a flop compared to the success of The Fame. Have her record label been in touch much to oversee things?
“There’s always going to be an issue when people expect a lot. People always think the longer they wait the better the album will be, like Daft Punk have been gone for seven years, so people think their next album will be seven times better than their last. It’s just a mistake. I think Gaga did exactly what she wanted with Born This Way and I think that’s the only way you can be a true artist. It’s the same with ARTPOP, she’s just doing what she wants to do.”

What is she like to work with? Do you get together in the studio much or do you pass things back and forth online?
“We’ve actually been together for most of the sessions. We spent a few months together in LA a while ago and then I went on tour with her in Asia for almost two months. After the shows we would set up a studio and work on the track. We tried to avoid working solely over email as it’s hard to bounce off each other’s ideas that way.”

Producing while on tour sounds tiring…
“It was. We laid down the musical parts and then I could clean it up in a proper studio afterwards. Seriously, we’ve been working with the worst speakers you can imagine! That said, her lyrics or vocals won’t sound any worse just because she did it in a hotel.”

How finished are the songs you’ve been working on?

“The songs we’ve worked on aren’t finished, but I have no idea how far along the other songs are. If she says they’re almost finished then they probably are.”

How many of the tracks you’ve been working on do you think will make the album?
“I honestly have no idea. I wouldn’t want to put that kind of pressure on her – it’s completely up to her what she puts on the final album.”

Tell us about a song you’ve been working on together.
“There’s just been no limitations at all. No set genre, song length, anything. I’m not afraid to show her the least commercial idea I have. She has a certain way of writing and she likes it to be challenged on the production.”

Lady Gaga interviewed by Stylist Magazine

Recently Lady Gaga has sat down for an interview with Stylist UK. During the interview Lady Gaga has spoke about her fragrance FAME, Body Revolution and also revealed a title of a song from ARTPOP, GUY, standing for Girl Under You.

Do you use hair and make-up to express a particular persona?

I just love to have fun and be experimental with all sorts of things. I’m a naturally very creative person. So when I see things that are interesting, I want to wear them or show people them or sing about them. I have an attraction to uniqueness. Perhaps that also explains a bit about the scent as well. It’s about people being attracted to something that’s unique.

Do you feel like you transform in the make-up chair, going from one element of your character to another one?

I would think I’d be f*cking crazy if I thought about myself the way that you think about me! No, I just take a warm bath, smoke a doob, lay back and relax, you know?

What’s the beauty look that most represents who you are?

As myself? I would say when I’m in the bath, naked, in a sea of bubbles going, “Aaaah.” That is most me – when I’m sighing out the whole day into a warm bath. So I guess what I’m saying is when I’m wearing the bathtub. The bathtub outfit.

Can make-up and feminism ever truly be friends?

You know what’s so funny is, I actually think there’s a new feminism that is completely different and I don’t think either is better or worse. Any kind of feminist has valid views for herself about what it means to be a feminist, but, as a new-age feminist, I would say I quite like the transference of strength I feel by submitting to a man – being under him. I actually wrote a song about it on my album, it’s called GUY and it stands for Girl Under You. So wearing make-up, smelling delicious and having suckable, kissable, edible things between your limbs is something I find strengthening because I know that when I pick the right guy, I can let him have it. Some women feel oppressed by make-up and clothing, and here’s to them, they have every right to feel that way as well.

Do you see your expression through beauty as an art form? And if so, how does it feel to dissect it?

If I wasn’t working on my record, I might say, “Yeah, f*ck off, I don’t want to talk about make-up”, but when I’m working on music, I need every palette and paint at my disposal, so I like to talk about everything all the time. The way that I approach doing a fragrance is sort of like Pop Art. It’s about the commercialism of bottling fame. Everything about this fragrance reeks of a high-school artistic statement about how fame is horrible and ugly – but it smells delicious. There’s something quite juvenile about the whole thing. But to make a point of it, I’m saying anybody can have Fame – it’s £24.50! That’s the art of it.

Do your own personal beauty experiences still influence how you present yourself today?

Do you know what’s really funny, and I was kind of afraid to admit this, but I’m just going to say it anyway, ‘cos I think my fans will really appreciate it. I am throwing my best friend an engagement party this weekend, and I’m going to be seeing all these girls from high school, and I would be totally lying to you if I didn’t say I was worried about how I’m going to look! I was saying earlier, “I have to look fabulous, I have to look absolutely amazing, some of them were horrible to me!”

Why do you think women often use other women’s looks against them?

I think women are just, for no reason, wretched to each other all the time, and I don’t think they use clothes or men or perfume or make-up or anything more than they use anything else. We should all make an effort to be nice to one another all the time.

Tell me about your ‘Body Revolution’ [which encourages her fans to celebrate their flaws]?

I’ve realised I don’t have to do very much anymore but make music, because my fans do it all for me. They carry the message so far. Ever since they saw how much Born This Way could affect people, they wanted to do more and have that sort of space of kindness and compassion. I was acutely aware of some photos on the internet – my mum called me and was like, “Did you gain weight?” – everybody was telling me about it, and I didn’t really care. But when I heard it was on the news, where they talk about wars, the economy crashing and the election – I just thought, ‘This is f*cking ridiculous.’ I mean, what kind of example is that to a young girl sitting at home? I thought, well I don’t really care if they think I’m fat, because, quite honestly, I did gain about 30 pounds. Adele is bigger than me, how come nobody says anything about it? She’s so wonderful and I think her confidence is something I have to match. She has set the bar very high for a lot of woman. I need to be a confident woman and just say politically active things when I can that are helpful to young people.

Does the notion of being sexually attractive to the opposite sex factor in to how you present yourself?

Sometimes, yeah. Sometimes I think, “Well, no-one’s going to want to f*ck me in that!”

What makes you feel more beautiful – a compliment from a man or a woman?

Well, not just any man. A certain man.

What would be your beauty mantra for Stylist readers?

Sit in front of the mirror with all of the paints and colours and wigs that you have at your disposal, and just have a real talk with yourself. “What do I not like about me?” And then, peer into the mirror – and just f*cking draw right over it because that’s what make-up is here for. We’re not all perfect – it’s meant to be fun so we can bond as women, and say, “You know, what? We don’t all feel perfect, but did you try that lipstick? It’s divine.”
